The Miser

Theoretical Design, UNCSA 2024

The Miser explores society’s obsession with wealth, and its corrosive effects on family relationships. It follows Harpagon, a miserly and controlling old man, whose obsession with hoarding wealth creates chaos in his household. As his adult children pursue their own romantic interests, they clash with Harpagon's schemes to arrange financially advantageous marriages, leading to an unraveling of deceptions and misunderstandings.

While originally set in 1660s France, amide the rise of the bourgeoise, I chose to modernize The Miser by setting it in 1980’s Wall Street, with essence of some characters being influenced by modern-day individuals who embody the play’s core themes. Themes of avarice, control, and deception are timeless and can be adapted to suit a multitude of settings, however, the 1980’s was a period of extreme wealth, corporate greed, and financial ambition that make it a particularly fitting setting for The Miser’s plot to unfold.
